  Baptisms

This is a Sacred Rite of Inclusion into the Christian Community. So much has happened over the years in the Church to take away from the real meaning of this Sacrament. It’s importance lies in the fact that it claims a person for Christ, and says that this person is a member of the Christian Community and can count on the community to nourish him or her in the faith.

Years ago, some of you might remember, there was a strong belief amongst Roman Catholics that if an infant wasn’t baptized and died then that baby did not go to hell but a place called “Limbo”. In the January 9, 2006 issue of Time magazine there was a report that according to a particular Cardinal in Rome the very existence of Limbo is in crisis. Well, like so many other beliefs in the Churches history Limbo came into existence as a defense against something else. Needless to say that defense/reason is no longer applicable or needed. Besides what kind of a loving God would put a baby in such a place far away from the source of eternal happiness? Certainly, not the God of the New Testament.

I believe that Baptism is a right of every person. I do believe that Baptism claims a person for Christ and is inclusion in the Christian Community. As such the person, or family of the infant need to practice the faith and see to it that the child is raised in the faith. In the name of the Community I stand ready to help and support the one to be baptized along with the family and godparents of the one to be baptized. One should be willing to accept and practice the tenets of the faith.
